Easy summer option with some quirks
The dress came together very easily. The finishing of the neckline and the armholes was not as straightforward as I’d like them to be due to asymmetrical cut and differences in fabric behavior as a result. I like how the front drapes, the length and the easy feel of this dress. What I didn’t like was cutting front halves differently in terms of fabric grain which resulted in additional work finishing the neckline to make it look more symmetrical. The other issue is excessively deep armholes - they end waaay below the bra which means you have to wear a tank top of sports bra underneath if you plan to go sleeveless. . Also the armhole shape is not accommodating for curvy bodies - you’d have to either add some darts (yuck), or rework the armhole to sit a bit higher under the arm. I wasn’t planning to show off my arms anyhow, so that issue isn’t noticeable under the jacket, but you have to be aware of these issues before you cut the final fabric. Try the top portion at least in muslin to be sure. I wear this dress with Daniella pants and a cropped knit jacket which worked out very well for me. I inquired a while back about which top they’d recommend wearing with this dress, and Tina’s staff suggested Gypsy jacket, which is my next project. If I had to make Yenell again, I’d rework the armholes and cut the non-ruffled portion of the front slightly slanted to match the grain of the other half. The fabric quantity was stated excessively. I am 3X and only used 4 yards of fabric with a ton of fabric leftover. Cut the largest pattern first, then fold the fabric and cut the rest - there will be plenty left to make a short jacket or a pair of shorts.
